We visited Laura at her home studio, we got to see where all the magic happens and hear about her process and passion for what she does.
How did Laura Elizabeth Design start?
I studied event management, initially I wanted to do wedding planning and then I did a few weddings and I was like “ooh wow, this is ALOT of work”. I’ve always loved stationery, all things paper, even in my university degree, all my presentations were always over the top, I’d always have posters up, so I’ve always loved that side of it and then just being able to combine weddings and graphic design into what I do is really nice. So, I started just doing a few friends wedding invitations and just started rolling from there.
“No cookie cutter designs. No run of the mill vibes. Just tailored creations that look incredible and feel authentically you.”
Tell us about your style and what you’re drawn to…
I love colour blocks, bold colours, matching odd colours together, that’s what I’m really drawn to. A really big part of my work is the experience of opening up the invitations, you unravel it all to find out the information.
Couples come to me because of my style, my layering and shapes, which is really great. So when they come to me they usually send me a few different styles they like or the colour palette of their flowers or their bridesmaids dresses and I kind of pull it all together from there.
I assemble everything for my couples as well. That’s a big thing, I want them to receive it all done, they don’t have to do anything other than put a stamp on and post it out.
What does the process look like for you?
I start ideally, with save-the-dates and carry through to invites then all the on the day stationery. So all the fonts and colours we’ve used for invites is carried through on the day for the seating plan, welcome sign, place cards, menus all that jazz, it’s really fun to see the whole concept. That’s where I can work with the wedding planner and really work on that style and make sure the colour of the napkin and the menus and place cards are all working together.
What should couples keep in mind when thinking about their wedding stationery?
It’s really nice to personalise your stationery. Say you’re getting married at a venue and you chose that venue because of the big fig tree, it’s cool to incorporate that into your invitation design. A really big difference with my work is that with all of my stationery, it’s the experience, it’s not just an invite off a website that you’re buying a template from, my work is really customised to the couple. It’s the first thing your guests are receiving, the first insight into your wedding, so you can really have a lot of fun and set the tone.
What is the best part of your job?
It’s definitely the final product. When I get it back from the printers, it’s like Christmas! I love unravelling it all and then I put it all together, Mum and I assemble it and it’s so great hearing the feedback from couples as well. They’re definitely the best parts.
