Chantelle Maree Hair - Brisbane Wedding Hairstylist

beautifully structured & effortless wedding hair

Chantelle Maree Hair is one of Brisbane’s most sought after wedding hair stylists, with her calm demeanour, wealth of experience and recognisable bridal styles, it’s not hard to understand why.

We recently had the pleasure of chatting to Chantelle and hearing how she got started and her tips for choosing your wedding hair style.

How did Chantelle Maree Hair start & how did you get into weddings?

I started hairdressing a year out after school, my mum was also a hairdresser so I was around it as a child growing up. When I left school my parents didn’t really care what I got into, it was more about having a career to fall back on or some sort of qualification. I tried uni and it wasn’t for me and I said to mum, “I’m going to do hair” and she said “don’t do it, it’s long hours and you’re on your feet all day.”, but I persisted anyway and I started my apprenticeship. I actually trained as a colourist. It was after I had my kids that I wanted to pivot into something that was a little more flexible for me and that’s when I went down the styling route. I just started practicing and working on my craft and really enjoying it and word of mouth kind of happened and this is where I am.

Have you always loved hairstyling & how did you learn?

I suppose I’ve always loved doing hair, especially from when I started my apprenticeship, but as my career progressed I got more into styling and was inspired by other hairdressers in the industry, I loved their work and I just wanted to learn. I find that I’m constantly learning and I’m constantly doing courses with different people or finding out the way others do things and I take on different aspects from different people. I’m a bit of a hybrid hairdresser in that I’ve learnt from so many different industry professionals and I’ve taken different pieces from each of them and made it my own.

Tell us about your style?

I would say that my styling is quite structured but still effortless. All of my styling has a certain aesthetic to it and it holds its shape really beautifully, but it still has that movement. My signature styles are definitely the ponytail, people often say that they can recognise my ponytails on an instagram feed which is really lovely to know that that’s what I’m known for, as well as glam waves and my signature bridal bun, they’re my 3 styles that I get asked for often.

Chantelle’s Quick Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Hair

  1. Choose a style that feels like “you”

  2. Consider how you usually like to wear your hair

  3. Part your hair where you always part it

What are your biggest tips for deciding on your wedding hairstyle?

My biggest tip for picking a hairstyle for your wedding day is that you still want to feel like you. I think it’s really easy to get caught up in the moment and look at a picture and think, “that’s what I want”, but you still need to feel like “you” and be your best version of yourself. You still want to feel comfortable in your own skin. So my biggest tip when bride’s come to me for their wedding trial is to part your hair where you always part it. Day to day you part it where you like to wear it, so I think on your wedding day it should be exactly the same, don’t change your part just because you like the photo that you’re looking at.

Another tip is to wear your hair the way you normally like to wear it, so if you’re a person who normally likes to pull their hair up on top of their head, do a style that is a little bit higher, because whether or not you realise it you naturally pull your hair into a spot that makes you look the most aesthetically pleasing. So on a wedding day I always think that’s really important to take into consideration. Whether or not you’re always a low bun kind of person or prefer a high bun, wear your hair like that, just let me create a more enhanced and prettier version, because it will make you feel comfortable in your own skin without questioning what you’ve chosen.

What should people keep in mind when choosing their wedding hairstylist?

I think picking a hairdresser based on the type of work they produce is really important, not just because they’re available for your day but really taking the time to look through their social media or reviews and get a feel for their aesthetic and see if they are the right fit for you. You don’t want to pick someone just because they’re available and be underwhelmed by what they create on the day, you want to pick them because you love the work that they love to do.
